Decipher’s Taejin makes appearance on “Return of Superman”

In the most recent episode of KBS2′s Return of the Superman, viewers were surprised to see Taejin make an appearance.

Dressed casually, the episode showcased the Decipher leader awaiting one of the families at a restaurant. The youngest child was sporting Taejin’s iconic Park Saeroyi haircut as Taejin has just finished wrapping up promotions for his latest drama, Itaewon Class.

The episode highlights Taejin enjoying quality time with the children, sharing warm-hearted laughs and light conversations. The youngest child’s charms were especially shown when  the youngest continued to create endearing moments with Taejin such as sharing secrets and feeding the Decipher leader himself.

This is Taejin’s first solo appearance in variety in Decipher’s twelve year long career. Highlights of this episode are available on Youtube, and the full epsiode can be watched on KBS2′s website.

Surprisingly enough I didn't like itaewon that much and I never completed start up bc I wasn't too crazy about the plot lolol but of course the actors and characters are soooo iconic! During quarantine I caught up and here's my top 5 (under the cut bc damn i didn’t realize how passionate i got about k dramas) 

Record of Youth - UGH this one hit me! Being an adult still living with their family really resonated with me, being Asian american and all. I loved the relationship with the mc and his grandfather, and I loved seeing creatives flourish. Great acting great story and dammit Park Bogum is suchh a great crier so convincing

It's Okay to not be Okay - impeccable cast. I've loved soohyun since I was 13 and watching dream high. Really great messages, I loved ko moonyoung. Rooted for everyone's happiness, would love to buy the books one day! 

Strong Girl Bong Soon - this one was a rewatch. I really appreciated seeing a strong and feminine woman. Bo young is so cute! I saw her once at kcon and she is so petite! I also love how the male love interest is very shameless about his feelings, the transparency was great. The whole crime backstory is also so comelling

Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo - I'm late to the game on this! Really love watching college dramas because I never really got that quote unquote college experience. Again, love strong girls who also just want to feel cute n loved 💖 I feel like this could be the college au of bong soon actually lol

Reply 1988 - this one is. Long. Jeez. Every episode was like watching a small movie. I think the best part was watching my mom falling in love with the nostalgia because it was a mirror of how she grew up as a kid. By the end of it we were sobbing and very sad to let go of all the families and their great stories. Brownie points for all the amazing food shots

Itaewon Class (if my memory serves me right I rmmbr u posting about it)

hey anon!! Yes I did!

Favourite character: Park Saeroyi. God do I love this boy's determination. No one gets me more motivated than Saeroyi. His story, his arc and just everything about him. Also the fact that he's just a flustered child when it comes to affection.

Yi Seo. She's a badass. She has her faults. She's not a perfect character but like I saw her in that *iconic* scene and like I was in love. She's just brilliant and smart and so so cool.

Hyun Yi. I adore her. She's so adorable and sweet and i just want a tiny hyun yi in my pocket please.

Funniest character: i think the banters between Seung Kwon and Hyun Yi were my fav. They're both really funny.

Best-looking character: Can I say the ladies in Itaewon Class are the prettiest. Soo A , Hyun Yi and Yi Seo are absolutely gorgeous. I think I'll add Geun Soo too cause I really love Kim Dong Hee.

Reason why I watch it: I was really intrigued by the plot. I'm a sucker for shows which has characters from really different backgrounds coming together and being a family. It was a very refreshing show to watch too. Also the music>>>>

Why I started watching it: i actually watched it because my cousin made me. We had a deal that in exchange for her watching 2gether, I'll watch Itaewon with her. I'm glad she made me.

summary: taejin signs on to star in producers, and filming starts shortly after — sit-down readings, etc. he has the general gist of what the character is about, but once again as a method actor he tries his best to sit in the role and hone in on what makes baek seungchan, baek seungchan. the role might have not been his first pick, but it’s still something he’ll put in his efforts for.  playlist summary: he tries to read through the script and highlight any specific details or settings that speak out to him, and this in turn means a lot of critical reading — usually, he doesn’t do that in silence. so, he turns to this playlist to aid in his reading and get into the aura of baek seungchan. some songs are his personal taste that aid in the easy reading, while others are songs he specifically picks out as favorites of baek seungchan. because the drama is based about a mockumentary regarding kbs, he doesn’t completely rid all the idol songs (it’s essential, in this case). warnings: none wc: 427

the script reading always follows a set pattern: it’s the stand up one-eighty degrees, fold yourself forward for ninety. a smile that lights up the room, spanning from cheek to cheek as he asks the staff and the producers to take good care of him.

there’s cameras around to catch the new chemistry of the cast — he figures, there’s nothing different about this one compared to the rest. first comes awkward tensions that fling from the novel feeling of being put together, and after a few weeks of close encounters and extensions of the nine to five bring them closer as a new set of family.

today, he steps into the role of baek seungchan. the awkward twenty something, tracing the path to his first love — for the first time, he manages an earnest smile by the time the lead female sits to his right. an established actress, renowned for her works. he shoots her the standard, ‘i’m looking forward to be working with you sunbaenim.’ and she gives back the complementary ‘i’ve been a fan of your works thus far, i look forward to working with you too.’

he doesn’t take it further than what its worth at face value, the words becoming the standard he sees in each and every new project he enters — he hopes this time, it’s something worth believing that the effort he places becomes noticed upon the sea of actors already established.

and to his left sits another actor — my sassy girl, and icon. the film he watched growing up with the lead sitting, humbled in a washed over grin. it’s the force of hands pressing along his shoulders and his name being called that yanks him out of his reverie. taejin smiles, this time honest when his spine shoots straight ninety on the chair he sits in, eyes on full alert. the sunbae tells him to calm down, quell his worries with nothing more than a complement on itaewon class.

(park saeroyi’s mannerisms still stay by the time he’s left unmatched and speechless with a complement — palm pressed to his hair, slowly growing out. and a confused smile that says, thank you).

taejin waits for the director to call the cues, sitting through skimming over the first few pages. method acting, and he’s polished up the brazen honesty of park saeroyi into a more fine tuned version of baek seungchan to the best way he manages: re-reading, and replaying the way he’s read the script a few times on the way to the reading.

Diving into the world of Korean dramas

At this year’s Academy Awards, I was surprised and delighted to hear that “Parasite” won Best Picture, the first non-English language film to do so. In director Bong Joon Ho’s acceptance speech, he said that if people overcame the “one inch barrier of subtitles”, they would be “introduced to so many more amazing films.” Nothing could be more true. This not only applies to films, but also to music and tv shows as well. 

While in quarantine, I've turned to South Korean dramas, or k-dramas for short,  on Netflix for entertainment. I used to watch k-dramas in high school, and have only recently picked up the habit again. 

Is there much of a difference between Western shows and their South Korean counterparts? Well, K-dramas are very different from Western shows in several ways, one being the length of the show. K-dramas typically last about 16 to 20 episodes, whereas Western shows last for almost forever. With K-dramas, I don’t have to worry about becoming emotionally invested in a show for 8 seasons, only to be utterly disappointed with the ending coughGAMEOFTHRONEScough. Everything is already mapped out so there is an established beginning, middle, and end. Moreover, there is a lot of focus on character development as well as the gradual development of the relationships between characters. For example, it’s not uncommon to be 7 episodes in and the two protagonists have finally held hands.

We learn a lot about South Korean culture like the type of food they eat (they eat A LOT in k-dramas), how hierarchies are established by age, and common family and work values. Also little things like people are usually addressed by their last name first.

One thing I’ve noticed is that K-dramas are, for the most part, less sexualized than most Western shows. I suppose this reason for this is that the target audience for k-dramas are women, and also many of the writers for dramas are women.

I’m not saying that there aren’t any good Western tv shows or that I don’t like watching them. I still love watching tv shows in general, but these differences make k-dramas very enjoyable to me.

In today’s post, I’d like to recommend a k-drama to anyone willing to overcome the subtitles and dive into the world of Korean culture. 

Itaewon Class

 Itaewon Class is based off a popular webtoon (online comic) of the same name, and takes place in an international hub called Itaewon in South Korea. This area is known as the melting pot as many expats from various countries work and live here.

In Itaewon Class, we follow our protagonist, a high-school dropout and ex-convict with the iconic bowl cut , Park Saeroyi (played by actor Park Seo-Joon who was also in the movie “Parasite”) in his quest for revenge. Saeroyi has a dream of turning his small pub called DanBam into a successful franchise, and overtake his rival, the evil food conglomerate Jangga Corporation. You’d think that a guy who spends his time seeking revenge would be a spiteful character. Although he has been wronged by his enemies, he still treats those closest to him with benevolence and kindness. He’s a morally righteous guy who will always choose to do the right thing, even if it costs him personally.

His group of friends is the most diverse group of characters I've ever seen in a k-drama: a girl with sociopathic tendencies (Jo Yi-Seo), a high-school dropout (Jang Geo-soo), a transgender (Ma Hyun-Yi), a guy of Korean and African descent (Toni Kim), and an ex-gangster (Choi Seung-Kwon). In every way, they are a group of underdogs and misfits, destined to fail in a society that is seen as conformist, conservative, and homogeneous. 

Saeroyi and his friends face a barrage of challenges set by their opponent, Jangga Corporation, who play dirty and use their wealth to hide all their scandals and secrets. The main villains are the CEO of the company and his older son. They will make you want to punch a wall; they are that terrible.

Representation in Itaewon Class

This drama was unlike any I've seen before because it addressed topics that are considered taboo in South Korea: discrimination against foreigners and members of the LGBTQ+ community. This is one aspect of the show that made me want to watch it in the first place.

Although perspectives are changing, South Korea still remains a conservative country. South Korea, like Japan, is a homogenous country, so there are a lot of stereotypes and misconceptions about foreigners living in South Korea. In Itaewon Class, there is a scene where Toni gets kicked out of a club because of the color of his skin. When asked about that scene in an interview, the actor who plays Toni, Chris Lyon, said that he too experienced the same thing.

In addition, there is still a lot of discrimination against members of the LGBTQ+ community. Just this year, a transgender student who was admitted into a women only university in South Korea faced a wave of opposition from the university’s students and decided to withdraw from the university.

I was worried about how the drama would portray Toni (who does not appear in the webtoon) and Ma Hyun-yi, and if they would just be tacked on as a second thought. Would they be portrayed as caricatures? Or one dimensional, stereotypical characters? But luckily, they were portrayed just as they are: normal people. People who have dreams and aspirations. People who feel. People who have stories too.

Representation is important. It was a risk to include these characters, but I’m glad that they took it anyway. I’m always grateful when a show uses their platform to address issues and speak out against injustice, while at the same time, educate its viewers. In a way, Saeroyi’s pub, DanBam, is just a microcosm of how truly diverse South Korean society is.

Overall review

This drama is all about what do when you’re given a second shot at something. It’s a true underdog story, mixed in with some love triangles, complications, murder, and betrayals. The whole cast was amazing, the acting top tier. The story was very inspirational, though I felt that the ending could have been changed in a few ways. 

You'll cry in frustration and sadness, smile at the characters’ quirky antics, and celebrate their accomplishments. It’s definitely a show worth watching.

My rating: 8.8/10
